SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 1/14/25
Hello everyone! Steve, Chris, and Dennis ran the Soo to Kinross route on 49 last night. I always look forward to Steve’s reports, and it’s always an adventure on this trail!
Here’s what he had to say-
“Last night Passenger Chris and I headed out to groom Trail 49 from the Soo to Kinross. There was light snow falling and we had some recent snow to work with. It was setting up to be a nice night.
Before leaving town, we opened up the courtesy trail to Chippewa Motors. We made one pass and panned the powerline where all the recent utility work has been done. Snow is thin but the trail is useable.
We then headed south and made use of our Limbmasher in places that needed trimming. We took down a lot of limbs on our way through.
We stopped at the M-28 crossing to check things over and clean off the drag. Chris tripped on something while walking behind the drag and we realized we were tangled in a bunch of old fencing and dragging a stop sign. We were not able to undue the mess so we set it all on top of the drag and continued on.
Things went well until we dropped into the swamp south of 12 Mile. The same couple hundred yard stretch we have been battling all winter opened up again and is open water. We made our way through working with the little bit of snow we had leveling up the best we could. Trail is rough but is getting better. There are thin spots with dirt showing.
We crossed Gaines Hwy and headed towards our turnaround in Kinross. I did not realize it, but while crossing the Hwy, I dropped some snow and large ice chunks off the drag. I apologize to the vehicles that hit the mess.
We made the return trip and had plans to meet Groomer Dennis at the 7 Mile Rd crossing to help remove the wire from the drag. We had the stop sign we were dragging labeled with the road name so we knew where it had to be reinstalled. We were able to replace the stop sign and get the wire removed from the drag.
Dennis continued from there back to the barn. His return trip was uneventful.
Overall, the trail is coming along good. It is still a work in progress. The ditches are still showing water and the snow is thin in places. We are working with what we have and just need some more cold weather. The ground is still melting the trail base from the bottom up in our bad spots. Hopefully we keep making improvements as we go along.
Steve Lawson
Chippewa Motors, Inc.”
Definitely always a story on trail 49. We sure will be grateful when this trail receives the approval from the state for much needed permanent improvements to mitigate the water issues. Still way ahead of where we normally are on that stretch in early January👍🏼 #soo #snowphotos ... See MoreSee Less

ONTONAGON AREA UPDATE via North Country Snowmobile Club UP >> Good Morning!
Today is 1/14/25. Be alert for groomers on the trails during the day today and tomorrow as we work to catch up on grooming. We still have a downed groomer out at 102 and trail 11; 18 miles from a plowed road inside the Porkies. It should be nearly buried in lake effect snow by now!
NEW SNOW? - LOTS! Trails are rated GOOD TO EXCELLENT! Some thin spots, but WOWIE are we back in business!!
TRAIL 12 FROM ONTONAGON EAST TO Pat's Motorsports IN GREENLAND: GOOD CONDITION. Groomed up last night! We believe the wet areas are resolved and regular grooming activity (Nightly) resumes this week!
TRAIL 137 FROM 13 TO Roxey's Bar & Grill IN DOWNTOWN ONTONAGON: GOOD TO FAIR CONDITION. A few spots are thin, but it's in fantastic shape. Excellent option to get you into and out of Ontonagon!
TRAIL 12 FROM ONTONAGON WEST TO Hamilton's North Coast Adventures: FAIR CONDITION. Thank you to the Scott's Superior Inn and Cabins team for brushing the ditches for us! We have a lot more to do, but Wyatt is working his way down the ditches today. PLEASE BE RESPECTFUL OF THE NORWICH ROAD RESIDENTS. Do not fly down the road at 70mph. PLEASE keep your noise and nuisance to a minimum. Remember, we live here, you are a guest! We need to improve signage and way finding on this route.
TRAIL 13 FROM 137 WEST TO TRAIL 101: GOOD TO VERY GOOD CONDITION. The drag broke just after Joe groomed down Rock Hill by the 137 intersection yesterday. Josh Ramsey will be grooming it tonight to make it all better!
TRAIL 1 FROM WHITE PINE TO LAKE OF THE CLOUDS: GOOD CONDITION. It was groomed today.
TRAIL 11 FROM SOUTH BOUNDARY ROAD TO 102: EXCELLENT CONDITION. Being groomed today. Be alert for our groomer that is broken down out in the porkies. We are working to get it back online ASAP!

CEDARVILLE - DETOUR UPDATE via Les Cheneaux Snowmobile Club & Grooming Report >> The Les Cheneaux area (Cedarville, DeTour, and Hessel) finally got more snow! We had groomers out doing what we could do with what we have.
491 groomed out pretty good. Some of the ditches are still soft. 47 from M-48 into DeTour was also groomed. There will be some rocks here and there.
47 from Cedarville to 491 is good to poor-fair. Some of the trail came out good. Some just needs some more cold and snow. It's very passable, will be better as we get a few more grooms in.
49 from Cedarville north... Not good. We sent a groomer through. Our problem area wasn't horrible, but an old problem came back. Groomer got stuck and had to disconnect to got out. Then he pulled the drag out with a chain to rehook. We will re-evaluate later in the week.
We hope to head west of Cedarville on Wednesday. The local trails will be done on Tuesday. Hopefully they are freezing in.
Looks like the temperatures are in our favor. No bring on the snow! #snowphotos ... See MoreSee Less

Munising, Michigan
Yesterday was a travel day for us from Houghton to Munising. It snowed ❄️❄️ the entire way. It continued to snow on and off during the night. We woke to about 6” of new snow today. Of course we took advantage of that new snow and took Trail 8 to Grand Marais. See the picture of Jim and all the snow coming down. We had a delicious lunch at The Lake Superior Brewing Company. For a Monday, there are lots of snowmobilers out enjoying the snow and trails.

FREDERIC - GAYLORD AREA UPDATE via Sledheads of Frederic , Michigan Snowmobiling >> Its noon on monday in downtown Frederic, there was a little snowfall overnight but I have seen no sleds out and about today. Yesterday it was slow around frederic but I checked the first trailhead parking 2 miles west of grayling on 72 and there were only 4 trucks there. Then I went out in the hills just past the Black Bear Inn and that far west parking lot about 12 miles from grayling and there must have been 30 trucks and trailers in there. It was jam packed and that is because all the snow is north and west of here. Lets see if it keeps coming this week. Good morning everyone!
We picked up close to 5” of new snow in the Soo since yesterday morning. This is exactly what we needed to freshen things up!
Lane was out in Kinross overnight and said they got some since fresh snow down that way too. Really helped make his groom on 49 south of M80 and the 494 loop even better!
More to come this week too!
Pete groomed the city trails last night and said those turned out good too. We are staying out of the Kewadin trail for a few days to let the water spots freeze up. There is a new water hole we haven’t seen before. It’s about 80’ long. Pete said sleds are getting around it just fine, but please take it slow through there! Thanks guys!
Enjoy! ❄️❄️❄️

A partial segment of 102 was covered but due to a technical issue the groomer had to turn around. You're still going to find thin spots and icy corners but overall things are improving. We tried to get there, but there is a pretty nasty water hole on 8 just north of Lakeshore. I would not go that way until the Paradise club says it’s frozen over. We turned around and took Lakeshore to 123 to 474 to Hulbert and back the same way.

Our crews were busy last night! I ran the city trails with Jay, and we got 497 open! Yay! Not many pics as I was the operator for the majority of the run last night. Jay hopped in the seat to help with 497 in the really gnarly spots. It’s looking great now! I used the limb masher A LOT to clean up some overhanging brush. More needs to be done, but I got some big ones out of the way!
Chris warns that trail 49 south of 12 mile still has some wet spots. We simply need more snow to be able to pack them. It’s coming!
I haven’t heard from the Raco crew but I know they were out last night too.

Raco/Bay Mills update from Brimley Bill-
“This morning I groomed the power line and Mission Hill Loop 889. The trails were beat up from the high sled traffic yesterday, but there was plenty of snow to work with. I was able to cut down and fill in the moguls, even in the winding section of 889. I was out and done before any sled traffic, so there trails should be set up nice and solid.”
Awesome job Bill! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #snowphotos ... See MoreSee Less

FREDERIC - GAYLORD AREA UPDATE via Sledheads of Frederic , Michigan Snowmobiling >> Sunday morning same old report. Just a few flakes fell yesterday and light snow in the air this morning. Same trailer count at the 2 hotels in Grayling. Zero at the Days Inn and 3 at the Ramada. There were a fair amount of sleds into Frederic yesterday and the pic below was at the Swamp. Most riders had the same thoughts that it was thinner as you came into Frederic and better to the west and north. Scattered snow thruout the week coming in the predictions so lets see what happens this coming week and maybe we will get a good MLK weekend... #gaylord #snowphotos ... See MoreSee Less
